Tickets, reckless driving and commercial licenses

A ticket worth more than its fine

Points, insurance premiums and, on a commercial license, a job. Some tickets are worth contesting, and I'll tell you honestly which ones.

For most drivers a speeding ticket is a fine and a few points. For a driver with points already, a young driver, or anyone holding a commercial license, the same ticket can mean a suspension, a premium that doubles, or a letter from an employer. Reckless driving is heavier still: it's a criminal charge, and it's treated like one.

I'll look at your ticket and your record and tell you whether a hearing makes sense. If it doesn't, I'll say so and you'll owe me nothing for saying it.

Ticket questions

Is it worth hiring a lawyer for a speeding ticket?

Often not, and I'll tell you so. It usually is when you already have points, hold a commercial license, or the ticket says reckless.

Can a ticket be reduced instead of dismissed?

Sometimes a ticket can be resolved in a way that carries fewer points or none. It depends on the court and your record, and I can't promise it.

I drive for a living. What should I do first?

Keep the ticket, don't pay it yet, and send me its date and what it says. Paying it usually counts as a conviction.
